Harbaugh Lands 2016 Athlete/QB Commitment

Wow, the train keeps rolling for the Michigan/Harbaugh recruiting machine as the Wolverines land 3 star California recruit Victor Viramontes, a duel threat QB.  Interesting note, he’s being listed and an “athlete” and could end up at linebacker.  This is a vintage Harbaugh recruit.

From Rivals camp, Viramontes was the # 1 performer!

Whether it was hitting receivers on underneath routes or completing passes deep, the strong-armed Viramontes did a bit of everything in Baltimore. The shaggy hairdo might suggest he’s laid back — something that is often the stereotype for prospects from California — but the three-star prospect proved to be a fiery competitor and it showed, especially during the 7-on-7 competition. Though his future position has yet to be determined, particularly since he has garnered looks at linebacker, Viramontes showed the accuracy and timing that would make him a formidable signal caller at the next level.

In this edition of Big House Nation, Gregg talks with the son of Bob Ufer, Tom Ufer, to discuss his dad’s legacy and the direction of the Michigan football program under new Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh.

Michigan Gets TE Commitment Today

Why Can’t Harbaugh Get Five Star Recruits!?

Social Media is aghast at the most recent Michigan recruiting news.  Michigan is actually taking guys with “NR” next to their name on the recruiting websites.  If you aren’t aware, last week Michigan accepted verbal commitments from three players Dytarious Johnson, Antwaine Richardson and Rashad Weaver.  All of these players are unranked prospects with only two or three stars. The constant questions “is Michigan desperate, can’t Harbaugh get the five star guys, what’s going on with Michigan” are growing louder and the only thing I can tell you is to R-E-L-A-X.

The 2016 class at Michigan is going to be a huge class in terms of volume.  Some experts think Michigan will sign 25-28 players in the 2016 cycle and it is pretty obvious to me that is the case.  Jim Harbaugh wouldn’t be taking players like this if he didn’t have the roster room.  I’m fairly confident these mid to low range players are going to be contributors at Michigan, I believe Harbaugh and his staff can evaluate talent….until they prove otherwise.  We are going to find out very quickly if Harbaugh is a genius with under the radar guys or not, but you can also be sure that he will get his share of the “big name” high school talent.

There is a duel purpose to grabbing under the radar athletes, one, you buy before anybody else and when these guys are upper class-men they are solid starters for your team.  Remember, there are tons of guys in the NFL that were two and three star prospects.  You have to believe that Harbaugh knows what these guys are made of because of his years in the NFL.  One thing that is often forgotten in the recruiting process is that a lot of these 4 and 5 star guys are already at their ceiling.  They may not get much better than they are right now.  So you want a kid who can get better and hasn’t already peaked.

Another reason to take these under the radar guys is the establish a foothold in a foreign land.  Getting 3 players out of Prattville, AL in the last two recruiting cycles is big news.  The “Summer Swarm” was designed to build Michigan’s brand in the south, it will only make it that much easier for the Wolverines to pull a kid out of the south in future recruiting cycles.

So, if you are a Michigan fan waiting on the big score, relax, they are coming.  Check out the screen shots below.  Many of the top players like Gary, Kelly and Bush Jr. will wait longer to commit and you can be sure when the do, Michigan will be right in the mix.  When it is all said and done, most experts expect this class to be HUGE.

LIVE Periscope Feed From Michigan’s Satellite Camp In Prattville, Alabama

When this tweet came out this morning, I immediately checked the temp in Prattville, AL.  It’s 90 degrees today in Prattville and Jim Harbaugh is in khaki’s and and a long sleeve shirt.  Jim need’s help from his coaches on how to dress in the summer.  Maybe a golf shirt? His standard attire will be fine this fall in Ann Arbor, but it can’t be comfortable in June in the south.  Jokes aside, it appears the “Summer Swarm” tour is having the desired effect as Michigan already has one commitment in one day, it will be interesting to see how many more the coaches close before they return to campus.

If you’d like a live look at today’s camp in Prattville, check out this periscope feed.

Many have remarked that he is wearing a nike shirt; I have no clue what it means.  I’m still not sure why so many people care about which apparel company Michigan chooses.  Tell me why is matters?

Michigan Grab’s 4 Star Cass Tech Commit For 2016

Michigan got a big commitment tonight from 4 * OL/DL from Cass Tech Michael Onwenu.  Onwenu can play either offensive guard or defensive line and is the 7th commitment for Jim Harbaugh’s class of 2016.  Onwenu is a 6-4, 368-pounder ranked the No. 171 overall prospect in the nation, Michigan recruited him as a guard.

With the Onwenu commitment, Michigan now has 2 of the top 250 OL’s in the nation for the class of 2016 as he joins OT Eric Swenson from Downers Grove, IL as future Wolverines.

Harbaugh won a head to head battle with Urban Meyer on this one and you have to wonder if the botched recruitment of Mike Weber hurt OSU with the Cass Tech prospect.

It’s no secret what Jim Harbaugh wants to do on offense and add two elite offensive line recruits is a major step in the right direction for Michigan.  Michigan now is 24th on the Rivals.com recruiting board just ahead of Auburn and with a healthy 3.71 rating per commit, Michigan is 5th in the country.
